An 11-year-old was injured Saturday night after his campfire exploded, according to Dartmouth Police.

Police said emergency crews responded to a residence on Collins Corner Road at around 9:20 p.m. after reports that the child had received multiple burns.

Upon investigation, it was determined that the child received the burns after throwing a gasoline container into the nearby fire, resulting in the explosion.

Though the juvenile received multiple burns, none was life-threatening.

In an abundance of caution, the child was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence for further evaluation.

“We are all very relieved that the incident did not turn out much worse, and we certainly hope that others can learn from this dire error in judgment” Police Chief Brian Levesque said. “Should anyone have questions about campfire safety, I, along with my public safety partners, would encourage them to either contact their local fire department, or find information from credible online sources.”
