Bishop Stang announces National Merit Scholars

Ten students from the senior class at Bishop Stang High School have been commended in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

About 1.5 million high school juniors entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Commended Status Students scored among the top 50,000 students in the country and top 1,100 in Massachusetts.

The Class of 2016 commended students are: Elaina Alzaibak (Tiverton); Jack Charbonneau (Fairhaven); Noah Doerr (Westport); Adam Estes (Mattapoisett); Micah Makowski (Portsmouth); Jackson Markey (New Bedford); Maeve O’Malley (Dartmouth); Nicholas Pacheco (Westport); Cole Pavao (Warren); and Lucas Payette (Dartmouth).

Among these students, one will continue as a National Merit semifinalist. Only 16,000 are selected throughout the nation, and only 344 will be from Massachusetts.

The semifinalist will compete to become a National Merit Finalist and National Merit Scholarship award winner.

This year’s National Merit Semifinalist is Jackson Markey, son of Attorney and Mrs. John A. Markey, Jr. of New Bedford.
