Bishop Stang names new athletic director and football coach

May 31, 2017

Dennis Golden is Bishop Stang High School’s new athletic director and varsity football coach, the school announced on May 31.

Golden replaces outgoing athletic director and football coach Ryan Sylvia, who announced his departure to take up a position at Middleboro High School earlier in the month.

“Bishop Stang is proud to welcome Dennis Golden as our next Athletic Director and Head Varsity Football Coach,” said Bishop Stang President/Principal Peter Shaughnessy in a statement. “Dennis Golden is an experienced coach and mission-driven person who will ensure that Bishop Stang's Catholic mission is fully integrated into our academic-based athletic programs.”

Golden’s coaching career spans nearly two decades. After teaching and coaching at DeMatha Catholic High School, he moved to Catholic Memorial School in 1999, serving as head coach of the Knights’ varsity football team from 2000-2004. In that timespan, he led the Knights to a 21-19 record, according to Catholic Memorial.

He left Catholic Memorial to pursue a 10-year post as head coach of New Bedford High School's football team, bringing in two Big Three titles and six straight wins against rival Durfee.

Golden returns to Catholic Memorial in 2014 as head coach to the freshman football team, and took over the varsity team in 2015.

Looking forward to his first season with the Spartans, Golden said in a statement he is eager to provide his student-athletes with memorable experiences and foster their growth.

“Athletics is one vehicle, in conjunction with faith, academics, arts and service, to educate young people as whole people,” Golden said in a statement.
