Boys hockey takes New Bedford Christmas Tournament title

Dec 24, 2016

The Dartmouth High boys hockey team took home an early Christmas present: the New Bedford Christmas Tournament title.

After beating out Greater New Bedford Voc Tech in the opening round on December 22, the Indians took home the title for the second consecutive year with a 4-1 win against rival Bishop Stang on December 23.

Nate Serpa got things started in the first period with a goal, putting Dartmouth in the lead at 1-0 after the first period. Bishop Stang upped its game and got a goal in the second, but Indian Max Andrade brought it to 2-1 to close the second period. Goalless for the majority of the third period, Scott Shorrock brought in two goals within 30 seconds of each other, securing Dartmouth's 4-1 win.

Head coach Michael Cappello credited the win to strong offensive and defensive action.

“[Andrade, Shorrock and Serpa] continued to put goals on the board,” Cappello said. “Our second and third lines knew their roles. We played well defensively.”

Cappello also credited his goalkeepers with keeping busy and making numerous big saves to block out Bishop Stang’s ability to score.

“I think we had the best effort I’ve seen yet from the team,” Cappello said.

The win brings the Indians’ record up to 4-1. After opening the season with a loss to Rockland, the Indians have been on a roll, picking up wins against Cape Cod Regional Tech and Bourne, and a win against Greater New Bedford Voc Tech to open the tournament.

The Indians take to the ice next on December 28 against Somerset Berkley, and will open the new year with back-to-back league matchups against Barnstable and Bridgewater-Raynham.
