Boys soccer enjoys undefeated season

Dartmouth High boys soccer coach Josh Silva has a rule: take it one game at a time.

As far as the boys soccer team is concerned, that strategy appears to be working. The team powered against league rival Barnstable on October 18, taking a four point lead in the first half and closing with a 1-8 win.

“At the end of the day I’m happy with the result,” Silva said after the win. “I felt like we were able to possess the ball, and we had contributions from a lot of different guys.”

Despite losing a number graduating seniors, a strong set of returning players still make up the 23-member team. Many players already saw varsity action last year, which Silva said helped get everyone into the game and soar to a 10-0-2 undefeated record.

“These guys are hungry, and they all have a passion to play,” Silva said.

Silva said the new players — including one freshmen — do present a challenge for seniors still perfecting their leadership skills, but added that it’s nothing his upperclassmen can’t handle.

“Our seniors are doing a good job,” Silva said. “At the end of the day, they want to win, but they also do a good job of leading and keeping the kids humble and hungry.”

Silva said his biggest obstacle so far is meshing so many talented players.

“We have a lot of skillful players, and it’s not easy putting that talent together,” he said.

Silva said he’s not speculating about postseason just yet, as the team’s last appearance in a state championship was in 2002, when the Indians faced a 3-2 defeat against St. John’s.

The Indians will take on Durfee on October 20, and have their final league game against Bridgewater-Raynham on October 25.
