Coastal Neighbors Network hosts ‘fundraiser and friendraiser’ yard sale
Coastal Neighbors Network’s yard sale on June 30 was not just a fundraiser for the organization, but also a “friendraiser,” according to Executive Director Andy Pollock.
By that, he means the event was a chance for residents to learn about the non-profit organization while making personal connections with volunteers.
Coastal Neighbors Network started in 2017 to support Dartmouth and Westport’s “Aging in Place Community,” or elderly residents that are remaining in their own homes as they age.
The organization is part of the “village” movement, a concept that links seniors aging in place together virtually and which began in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, according to the AARP. Pollock said Coastal Neighbors is one of 25 villages in Massachusetts.
Members pay an annual fee to be part of the network, and receive transportation, friendly visits, help with chores, a list of preferred providers, and health checks in partnership with UMass Dartmouth’s nursing program.
Helga Faulenbach has been a member since the beginning of Coastal Neighbors because her husband needed the help. Now she’s also a volunteer for the network and on the group’s entertainment committee.
“Coming from Europe, the family is very supportive [there],” Faulenbach said. “That’s missing in this country. Older people just stay at home and they can’t do anything anymore.”
She said the village means seniors don’t have to go into nursing homes and give up their independence.
“All you have to do is make a phone call and someone comes,” Faulenbach said.
That volunteer spirit was on display at the June 30 yard sale, when the Tzunux family stopped by to purchase some furniture, but with no truck to transport it.
“I got a truck, where’s it going?” said volunteer Rob Vercollone.
With some help from other volunteers, Vercollone loaded his truck full of furniture, ready to deliver it to New Bedford.
“[The volunteers] are very nice people who care,” Faulenbach said. “Sometimes I think it’s like family nearly.”
