Color guard hosts one final show before world championships

Dartmouth High’s varsity color guard probably won’t need a genie in a bottle heading into the Winter Guard International World Championships this week, as performers and choreographers agreed this year’s show is one of the best yet.

On Tuesday, teammates will board the bus to Dayton, Ohio for the three-day world championships. Out of 52 teams, Dartmouth High placed 17th heading into the competition.

This year’s color guard show, titled “Granted,” tells the story of a genie who can grant wishes. It is set in a marketplace with plenty of props, and includes plenty of rifle and saber tosses, and movement.

It also includes shout-outs to popular music, including dance segments set to Britney Spears’ "Slave 4 U"  and Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle.”

“For the past three years we’ve won fan favorite, so I try to incorporate more relatable things with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera,” said Anthony Cabral, show director.

The show focuses on Jesse Walker as the genie, with the rest of the 16-member varsity guard dancing and performing around him.

Cabral focused on making sure the show gave students an opportunity to perfect their spins and tosses — it features slow and fast-paced segments with frequent alterations throughout the show.

Performers can hardly wait to take the stage in Dayton. Reilly Leconte and Chloe Barton are two of the seniors in the show, both having been performing since before high school. Both noted they love the show’s subject matter.

“I feel connected with this show specifically because of the allusions to Disney,” Leconte said. “Growing up I’ve always been a Disney fan to playing the part really means a lot to me.”

They also noted how well the team seems to perform together.

“I feel like this year it's been the best than any in the past and we have a very good team,” Barton said. “I feel like there's a lot of energy.”

Dartmouth High will compete in the preliminary round on Thursday, semi-finals Friday, and the finals Saturday.

On April 1, the team hosted a send-off performance, performing for the final time in Dartmouth before departing to Ohio. The event also featured a performance by the junior varsity color guard, which just fell short of qualifying.
