Conservation restriction placed on 42-acres of farmland
During Monday night’s Select Board meeting, members unanimously approved a conservation restriction on Barney’s Joy Road.
Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, a non-profit, accredited land trust, requested the restriction. The group has protected more than 5,000 acres of land and maintains more than 35 miles of hiking trails in the region.
Dexter Mead, executive director of the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, said the land will remain privately owned, but the restriction will prohibit any future development. The property, which is at 156 Barney’s Joy Road, is currently own by Harry VonErtfelda.
The property totals about 50 acres and is directly across from Lloyd Demarest State Park. The restriction covers about 42 of the 50 acres.
“It has approximately 25 acres of prime farmland soils, over 2,000 feet of frontage on Barney’s Joy Road, which is a Town of Dartmouth designated scenic road, and it’s also close to a number of conservation restrictions in the area,” said Mead.
“The conservation restriction will add forestry, agriculture, habitat management, and agricultural structures,” he said.
The eight-acre section excluded from the conservation restriction has a house, sheds, barns and other infrastructure for the farm.
