Every year, the two high schools of Slocum Road face off in the first high school football game of the season. For the fourth year in a row, Dartmouth High School won the Battle of Slocum Road against Bishop Stang High School on Friday, Sept. 11.
“So proud of my guys, proud of my coaches, proud of my players,” said White. “[It’s] always good to win on opening night.”
It was a back-and-forth game, with Dartmouth overcoming by seven points for a final score of 14 to seven.
“Both teams fought really hard. You know, they made more plays than we made,” said Bishop Stang Head Coach Dennis Golden, “Credit to them.”
The crowd was energetic, both chanting and cheering for their teams. Many were dressed up in red, white and blue. Some had wigs, donned flags or were even dressed as the Statue of Liberty.
Bishop Stang had the lead at halftime, getting a touchdown with an extra point right at the end of the second quarter for a score of seven to six.
Early in the third quarter Dartmouth secured their win with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. The team ran out the clock in the last minute, officially winning the Battle.
“It was a great football game,” said Dartmouth coach Rick White, “Hats off to Stang, they played a great game… We were able to get this big sack at the end of the game and kind of turn a difference.”
The game started with a colour guard and students from both schools holding a flag.
Bishop Stang memorialized those who were lost on 9/11 from Dartmouth and Bishop Stang; Leah Oliver, Peter Gay, Reverend Francis Grogan and Diane Schnieder.
The next Dartmouth game will be Dartmouth Pride Night on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. Bishop Stang will face off against Old Rochester Regional High School in Rochester on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
