Dartmouth vs. Dartmouth in girl's varsity basketball
The girls varsity basketball teams from Dartmouth High School and Bishop Stang faced off on Monday, Jan. 19, and Dartmouth High School won 60-16.
“It’s good to have high school rivalries,” said Dartmouth High School head coach Brian Jalbert. “It’s the last bit of fun amateur rivalry that we have left.”
The game started off opposite of how it ended, with Bishop Stang starting strong, according to head coach Phil Harding.
“I think we just needed to reenergize ourselves, and once we got our energy together halfway through the second quarter, we were fine the rest of the way,” said Jalbert.
While the two teams are rivals in the sense that they two schools are both located in Dartmouth, the rivalry is quite friendly.
“We’re friends with a lot of the girls, so it’s kind of fun to [play against each other,]” said Kaelyn Zuber, a Dartmouth High School senior and one of the captains. “To have a good win is good, because we’re supposed to be like rivalries.”
The coach for the Bishop Stang team, Harding, actually started his academic and coaching career at Dartmouth High School.
“The rivalry’s very strong, but it’s very good now,” he said. “There was some really hard feelings a few years back, the rivalry had gotten a little out of control. Now it’s back to a good place where the coaches and kids compete hard but it's a friendly rivalry.”
Regardless of the loss, Harding was proud of his team.
“I’m having a lot of fun coaching them and they’re young and they’re learning,” said Harding, “They’re trying their best and they represent Stang very well.”
