DeMello/Cushman superhero carnival ushers in spring
All across the field behind Joseph DeMello Elementary, pint-sized superheroes, including Captain America and Superman, ran about.
DeMello and Andrew B. Cushman schools held the second annual superhero carnival Saturday, May 21. Organized by the Parent-Teacher Organization, the event was filled with superhero-themed carnival games, face-painting, green-screen superhero photos, obstacle courses, and raffles.
The carnival revolves around teachers and supportive figures as superheroes, PTO president Mary Waits said. The back wall of the school building was plastered with student drawings of their personal heroes, which included everyone from mom and dad to Elsa from Disney's "Frozen."
Seventy-six sponsors—who donated more than $10,000 in prizes—backed the carnival, said Waits. Five parents organized the event, but 30 parents from around the district pitched in.
More than 150 families pre-registered for the event. By the time the carnival began at 11 a.m., the field was overrun with costumed children ready to have fun.
Siblings Ella and Miles Bosworth, garbed in capes, tore about the obstacle course, jumping, bouncing, and sprinting their way through the "Elasti-Girl Escape" and "Hulk's Hay Hustle.”
The Dartmouth YMCA's Marissa Carvahlo and Peter Bruce entertained some of the rowdier kids with "Paranoia," a high-pressure spin off of capture the flag. After several minutes of chasing each other, trying to steal away as many flags as possible, Simon Rivet, 9, came out on top.
"I won twice in a row," Rivet proclaimed.
One particularly popular game was the "Knock A Villain" water gun shootout. Kids lined up to take aim at Star Wars villains like Darth Vader and Kylo Ren.
Dressed as Captain America, Cameron Perry, 6, could hardly contain his excitement at all the games and fun to be had. He went running to Superman to get his photo taken.
"I love all the superheroes," Perry said. "I love them all."
Proceeds from the event go toward the PTO, which helps fund extra-curricular activities, special speakers, field trip school buses, teacher supplies, and more.
