Friday night fever at seventies-themed disco fundraiser

On a weekend when people pushed their clocks ahead, time was turned back to the 1970s at a March 6 fundraiser at Valley Top Tavern and Events at Dartmouth’s Allendale Country Club.

Disco balls were spinning and outfits were sparkling as participant enjoyed a “70s Night’’ event, which featured a buffet, raffle, silent auction and music from the 1970s, with an emphasis on disco.

The evening was hosted by the Msgr. A.G. Considine Scholarship Committee at St. Mary’s Church and was spearheaded by Megan Medeiros, chairperson of the scholarship committee.

She chose the 70s night theme as a “good way to bridge the gap’’ between generations and bring the church community together.

For Medeiros, the fundraising dance was also a chance to give back. She was a recipient of a Msgr. A.G. Considine scholarship, which is helping to support her education at Bridgewater State University, where she is studying to become a teacher.

The scholarship program, hosted by St. Mary’s Church in Dartmouth, awards three $1,500 scholarships each year to parishioners of the church.

The dance is the first ever for the committee and a major fundraiser for the scholarships, Medeiros said.

She thought the 70s theme would be “fun,’’ she said, and the full house seemed to agree.

Parishioner Steven Sullivan donned a sparkly jacket for the dance. “You’ve got to dress for the occasion,’’ he said with a laugh. With little prompting, he created the iconic John Travolta “Stayin’ Alive’’ pose and said he looked forward to a  “good time.’’

Jackie Giusti and Patty Vieira, friends since the fourth grade, went together to the dance. “I wanted to get out of the house,’’ Giusti said.

Vieira said she was happy to support the scholarship fund, which she described as a “great charity.’’ Besides, she said, laughing, “We lived through the 70s.’’

Rev. David Frederici, the pastor at St. Mary’s, said that the “community event is a good thing, a positive thing.’’

Parishioner Cristal Medeiros, who helped her niece Megan run the event, said she was a big fan of Abba, with their hit “Dancing Queen’’ topping the list.

Richard Wotton shares her enthusiasm for 70s music — which he said his neighbors know.

“I have a stereo in my garage with outdoor speakers playing music from the 70s and 80s,’’ he said. “That’s what I grew up on. That’s my era.’’
