Here's what's going on in Fire District No. 2

Apr 19, 2017

While District No. 2 has no candidates running for its three-year Prudential Committee opening, it does capital improvement projects on its May 9 agenda.

Committee Chair Ralph Medeiros said the department plans to add a new compressor and dive tanks, and that there are six years left for paying off the headquarters $1.4 million extension, installed in 2013.

"We're trying to make plans to replace the pumper truck," said Medeiros, adding that the committee is still a couple years away from adding the $400,000 vehicle. "Ours is getting old, but it still works," he said.

Medeiros said that the volunteer-based department is strong, thanks to Chief Tim Andre's recruitment and training strategies.

"We're pretty well-run. Training is up. Equipment is up. I'd like to see us get back to a three-member board," he said.

Medeiros added that his main concern is keeping the tax rate low. "I'm trying to hold the line for the taxpayer," he said. He added that it's difficult due to the lack of growth in District No. 2. "The land has been mostly consumed," he said.

Medeiros has been on the committee for at least 10 years; his term expires in 2018. His peer, Bernie Giroux, has been on the committee for four years.

In the meantime, voters will be asked to write in nominations for the committee seat at the April 24 election. Voters can head to the 1100 Russells Mills Road location.
