New Bedford woman downs cop in hit-and-run
A New Bedford woman hit an officer with her car, before leading Dartmouth officers on a chase through downtown New Bedford on December 7.
According to police, an officer responded to Jones Park around 8:30 p.m. to investigate a suspicious vehicle, where he found Alanna Baylies, 33, of 2100 Phillips Road, Apartment #13, New Bedford, slumped over the wheel of a blue 1998 Nissan Sentra.
The officer opened the door of the car to check on Baylies' wellbeing, but police said she put the car in reverse, trapping the officer between the door and the car as she backed up. The officer was thrown to the ground and later transported to Charleton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, where he was treated for an upper body injury and released.
Before he was injured, the officer was able to communicate Baylies' plate number to police. Responding officers found Baylies as she was attempting to drive to her boyfriend's house in Dartmouth, police said.
Police tried to get Baylies to stop, but she continued to drive. While fleeing, police said she crashed the car on Route 18 near Union Street in New Bedford. Baylies attempted to escape on foot, but was unsuccessful.
Baylies was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, failure to stop for police, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in personal injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, failure to stop/yield, and resisting arrest.
As a result of both paraphernalia located during the incident, as well as statements that she made, Baylies was also charged with operating under the influence of drugs.
After her arrest, Baylies was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford for evaluation.
