Opinion: Regarding food insecurity on college campuses
To the editor,
My name is Paul Morais, a student at the University of Massachusetts- Dartmouth. I’m writing
this in order to bring awareness to a problem plaguing the USA. The problem being food
insecurity, and you know that 44% of students are food insecure. Not only that, but they are
much less likely to graduate. Although we have more statistics that I could tell you about, I’d
rather tell you some personal stories I’ve experienced.
For example, over this Spring Break all dining services on campus were closed. Not just outside
dining services such as Dunkin, Wendy’s and Starbucks, but also the main cafeteria. Then when
they did open the main dining hall, they charged students coming to eat instead of using their
meal plan. This lead to many having to buy their own food, but not everyone was able to afford
it. This caused many students to go hungry.
I am writing this in order to spread awareness on food insecurity on college campuses. I’m also
hoping that many people in the community would help support the cause to stop this food
insecurity crisis among students.
Sincerely,
Paul Morais
