Opinion: Regarding Harry Reynolds Park Safety Concerns
To the Editor,
This writing is to express sincere concern about ongoing issues at DRPT/Harry Reynolds Park. The park closes at sunset. However, with unrestricted nighttime access it seems it is a hotspot for unsafe and potentially unlawful activity. Combined with recent reports of alleged lewd activities on the trails, the problems at this park are unacceptable.
Aside from nearby residents seeing and hearing vehicles traveling the park road at night, park goers can see signs of these activities. Empty liquor bottles and discarded condom wrappers found along the roadway and parking lots. On rarer occasions items that raise concern about substance use. Tire marks on the roadway and basketball courts add to the picture of misuse.
This creates a real safety and health risk for families, walkers, and others who use the park responsibly.
Various town officials have been made aware of these issues for years, yet little if any meaningful change has been seen. We deserve safe parks for our families, and this park should be no exception.
Enough is enough. The issues have persisted too long; an immediate solution is needed. Every relevant department and board should work together to secure this park and restore confidence in the town commitment to community safety. If necessary, emergency or reserve funds should be used to make the park inaccessible and secure every night and add effective surveillance. If a solution cannot be reached quickly, officials should consider temporarily closing the park until one can be implemented.
