Padanaram may get two-mile trail

Town committee members recently brought forward a plan to install a walkway along Padanaram Harbor.

The path would stretch from Smith Neck Road across the causeway, around the Davis and Tripp property to 280 Elm Street, south to Heritage Wharf by the New Bedford Yacht Club, and then emptying back out onto Elm Street.

"We want to provide the public with a little more access to the waterfront than we have now," said Alan Heureux, chairman of the Pathways Committee.

The committee presented the plan to the public for the first time on September 20, said Heureux.

The plan is very preliminary, said Heureux, who has also started discussions with the Padanaram Business Association.

Heureux explained that the committee was formed five years ago to in an effort to make the town more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly. With the causeway getting five-foot wide sidewalks, the committee thought it was time to look at the possibilities of a walkway going through Padanaram, said Heureux.

Currently named the Padanaram Harborwalk, the project would have access points from both Bridge and Elm streets, and park benches. Heureux said there are some property owners that will have to participate in the discussion.
