Patrons pack plant sale at St. Mary's Church
Hundreds if not thousands of plants and flowers passed into and back out of the doors, and just in time for Mother’s Day.
That was the scene at St. Mary’s Church Saturday morning, where the Buzzards Bay Garden Club held their annual Plant Sale. Countless flora could be found for sale after months of careful planting, pruning, and watering at the Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum’s greenhouses in New Bedford.
“The church has been very accommodating,” said Sue Siegal, a Dartmouth resident who has been a part of the Plant Sale since it started at the Duff House and grew into the larger facility located behind the church.
Siegal said proceeds from the sale go toward helping other groups with planting and gardening-related projects such as schools and non-profit organizations.
Several different types of plants could be found at the sale, from succulents to unusual annuals, heirloom tomatoes, herbs and unique geraniums.
“We work all winter long with cuttings, starting seeds — there are about 35 to 40 people who are active with the group,” said club president Carolyn Willard. “They’re the movers and the shakers.”
“Planning goes on for months,” added club member Laura McLean.
McLean said the sale has been going strong for over 20 years, and by late Saturday morning, a majority of the plants at the sale had already been purchased by the hundreds of customers in attendance.
“After, we’ll let our members loose to buy whatever’s left over,” joked McLean.
