Sam Sperry and Lucas Prout practice for Nationals. The Dartmouth High School Sailing team won the Cape and Islands League Championship on Wednesday, May 20.
Two of the team captains won a number of honors; Finn Sperry took top honors in the B Division and Sam Sperry won eight of his nine races in the A Division.
“Such resounding victories would not have been possible without crew stalwarts Lukas Prout, Evan Sargent, Phoebe Murray and Gabby Souza,” said Bob Conron, the Sailing Team coach.
They faced off against 13 other schools in the Cape and Islands League. Because of their win, two teams will be traveling to Annapolis, Maryland for Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 to compete in the Phebe Corckran King Memorial National Silver Championship.
Sam will be sailing the A Division with Lukas Prout, and Finn will be sailing in the B Division with Evan Sargent. These are the only four members of the team to go to the competition.
“It’s pretty cool that we managed to pull this off together,” said Finn about competing with his twin brother. The two have been sailing together since they were young.
Finn stated they had four goals this season; have fun, prepare the upcoming Varsity team as the current team has a lot of seniors, win the league and make it to Nationals. They have now accomplished all four goals.
“It’s exciting for us,” said Sam, “[Making Nationals] was one of our big goals this season. We were very unsure of whether it was going to happen … It’s pretty cool that we got through. It was a lot of hard work that made it happen.”
