Senate pushes $400 million transportation financing bill
The state Senate has approved a bill that would provide $400 million in financial support for road and bridge repairs, as well as $30 million for regional transit authorities and van funding for councils on aging.
Through the bill, Dartmouth would receive $1,194,360, but it also has to be passed by the state House of Representatives and Governor Charlie Baker.
The bill would allow towns to increase transportation aid for the disabled and elderly, according to a press release from Senator Mark Montigny's (D-New Bedford) office.
The van funding had originally been requested by Governor Bkaer, but was later removed from the House bill after the Joint Committee on Transportation dropped it from the legislation, according to the release. The Senate later restored this provision to ensure local agencies maintain the capacity to meet the specialized needs of vulnerable residents, said the press release.
The Dartmouth Council on Aging has been one of the organizations benefiting from this funding since 2015, along with the Kennedy Donovan Center, New Bedford Council on Aging, and the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority, according to the release.
If the bill passes, the following municipalities would also receive funding: New Bedford ($2,111,149); Acushnet ($326,163); Fairhaven ($522,304); and Mattapoisett ($229,161).
