Sister teaches sibling piano; recital at Symphony Music Shop

Few kids have the patience to learn how to play piano. Even fewer have the patience to teach their younger sibling.

However, that’s just what Anabelle Jonsson of Darmouth did for her sister, Katarina. Anabelle, 10, began taking piano lessons four years ago with instructor Faith Boci. Eventually, Katarina, 8, became curious enough about piano that Katarina took it upon herself to teach her “Hot Cross Buns.”

Katarina later began taking piano lessons with Boci and, after just four months, she jumped at the chance to perform in the annual recital, and she had fun doing it, she said.

Katarina performed “Old MacDonald” and her favorite song, “Merrily We Roll Along,” as well as “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” accompanied by her sister and Boci.

The Jonssons were two of Boci’s nine students to perform at the piano recital. Hosted at Symphony Music Shop on State Road, the students performed songs across a variety of categories ranging from classical to movie scores.

Family and friends filled the room to support their kids and enjoy a number of iconic songs from Beethoven’s “Fur Elise” to the Harry Potter theme song.

Boci, now in her 23rd year of teaching piano in Dartmouth, was pleased with her students’ performances. Since the last recital a year ago, she’s seen her students improve in “big jumps,” she said.

After the recital, some kids—who finally managed to shake their nerves—continued performing while attendees enjoyed refreshments. Boci also awarded them with certificates for their performances.
