Southworth Library to host geocaching seminar
The Southworth Library is hosting a seminar on geocaching on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. Guest speaker Tyler Clark will give patrons a crash course and will be accompanied by slides of his activities out in the countryside.
People who geocache (called “geocachers”) use either a handheld GPS or smartphone to locate small, hidden containers located in various locations. These containers are hidden using GPS satellites with specific coordinates, which show the users where to look.
Once a geocache (“cache” for short) is found, the user signs the log book inside and can trade any small items he or she may find as well. After the log is signed and the trades are made, the cacher puts the container back exactly as found.
Clark is currently a seventh grade teacher in Newport, Rhode Island. Clark has been geocaching for almost nine years, found over 6,000 geocaches in 19 states – as far away as California – and hidden nearly 600 caches for other people to find.
The program is sponsored by the Friends of Dartmouth Libraries and is free and open to the public.
