St. Aidan’s highlights church with classical music
More than 70 people showed up at St. Aidan’s Church to members of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra perform on July 27.
The concert featured three orchestra members: EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks on violin, Peter Zay on cello, and Piero Guimaraes on percussion, and featured classical pieces from Luigi Boccherini, Bohuslav Martinu, and Ludwig van Beethoven.
“We felt that we wanted to use the church and this beautiful space to introduce people who might not know about the church,” said Alex McFerran, chair of the church’s standing committee.
Before the concert began, musicians Zay and Holmes-Hicks agreed that St. Aidan’s Church is a favorite location to perform. The group has performed at the church several times in the past.
“It’s an awesome place to play,” Zay said. “The audience is so receptive here.”
In addition to classical music, the performance also featured an original, more modern song written by Kirsten Volness. Towards the end of the performance, the trio dove into more modern music with renditions of fiddle tunes arranged by Alasdair Fraser.
Alex McFerran, chair of the church’s standing committee, said that the church has been hosting summer concerts for the past eight years. He added that he hopes the concerts serve to highlight what the church—which holds services and events from the end of June to Labor Day weekend—has to offer.
St. Aiden’s is located at 185 Smith Neck Road.
