Ten percent of town has lost power; parks, beaches, mall closed

Aug 22, 2021

About 1,500 Eversource customers in Dartmouth are without power, about ten percent of the town, according to Eversource numbers as of 11:30 a.m., as Tropical Storm Henri makes its way through the area.

A fleet of Eversource trucks from around the country were parked at the Dartmouth Mall lot around noon Sunday.

“Our crews are ready to respond to any damage caused by the high winds and heavy rain of Tropical Storm Henri as it makes landfall,’’ Eversource reported on their website.

The mall is closed due to the storm.

A tree had blocked the road near Evelyn Street earlier in the day, according to fire communications information.

A drive through town about 11 a.m. showed few people walking out and about or visiting beaches, which is what public safety officials have advised against. Traffic was light, though Route 6 still saw a fair amount of vehicles.

There isn’t much to drive to. All Dartmouth parks and beaches are closed today, the Dartmouth Parks and Recreation Department reports. This includes the Bucket. In addition to the mall, many businesses and restaurants are also closed.

Picnic tables and trash receptacles will be relocated to high ground, the department reports. All trash will be carry-in, carry-out until Tuesday.

Facilities will reopen as weather conditions allow.

The Department Police Department encourages the public to stay off the roads if at all possible.
