Thursday, April 25

Buy a book.

The Southworth Library Fall book sale will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and continues through April 27. There will be thousands of books in all subject areas as well as DVDs, games, comics and more.

Watch a play.

The Bishop Stang Theater Company will present a performance of the Tony Award-winning musical Les Misérables at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, through Saturday, April 27. Tickets are $12 for adults, and students and seniors are $8. Tickets are available in the main office at the school, on 500 Slocum Road in Dartmouth, or call 508-996-5602.

See an art show.

The Dartmouth High School AP Digital Photography class will be opening their exhibit, “In the Moment”, at the Russells Mills Schoolhouse, 1205 Russells Mills Road from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will also be open on Friday evening from 4 to 6 p.m.

Saturday, April 27

Walk with birds.

Learn about migrant birds at the Lloyd Center’s first Spring Bird Walk from 7 to 9 a.m. Rain date: Sunday, April 28. Ages 10 and up. $10 for members, $13 for non-members, and $5 for kids under 12. Register online at www.lloydcenter.org.
 

Check out a chess tournament.

Students are welcome to test their mettle at the Dartmouth Rotary’s fourth annual Scholastic Chess Tournament from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the middle school, 366 Slocum Road. The tournament is open to all area students through grade 12 of all ability levels. Chess boards and pieces will be provided. Clocks are not required.

Touch a truck.

Explore vehicles from the Dartmouth Police and fire districts, construction vehicles, and other large trucks with the Friends Academy at 1088 Tucker Road during their free Touch a Truck event from 10 a.m. to noon. There will also be plenty of activities including a martial arts demo, flint-and-steel fire building, and mini-cake decorating. Rain or shine.

Play games at the Y.

The Dartmouth YMCA will celebrate Healthy Kids Day from noon to 2 p.m. with fun and games, including crafts, bounce houses, rock climbing, farm activities, archery and more. Learn about the YMCA’s programs and summer camps. Check out their Facebook page for updates and more information.

Buy a plant.

Helfland Farm and Community Gardens will host an early season plant sale at 318 Chase Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a “dividing perennials” workshop as well. For more information, go to www.helflandgardens.com.

See the stars.

Take a closer look at the night sky with a high-power telescope (weather permitting) at 8:30 p.m. at UMass Dartmouth’s Observatory, to the right of the main campus entrance off 285 Old Westport Rd. Children are welcome to attend with adult supervision. Admission is free. Parking is available on Ring Road or in Lot 17.

Learn about Alzheimer’s.

The Alzheimer’s Association will host a free talk on communication strategies for dementia caregivers on April 30, 1 p.m. at the Dartmouth Council on Aging, 628 Dartmouth St. Call (800) 272-3900 to register or for more information.
