Update on Westport Mid City Scrap fire
WESTPORT — As of 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5 fire crews were still on the scene of a fire that broke out at Mid City Scrap, located in Westport.
According to the Westport Fire Department, crews were still working on extinguishing deep seated pockets of fire within the scrap pile. As of 2 p.m., the pile had stopped smoking. Crews continued to put water on te pile to ensure it did not start smoking or reignite.
Westport firefighters will be continue to moniter the area overnight in case of a rekindle.
Firefigters from all three Dartmouth fire departments were also on scene to help control and extinguish the fire.
District 2 chief Erick Turcotte stated that aiding Westport was "normal," as they aid neighboring districts when needed.
Route 6 has been opened and is operating normally.
One worker was injured with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Westport Fire Department was dispatched to Mid City Scrap around 3:34 p.m. on Monday, May 4 where they encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from a scrap pile fire, which contained processed vehicles.
Mutual companies from the county and Rhode Island were requested for assistance.
Embers from the fire fueled by strong winds also caused brushfires across from the scrapyard along Davis Road but were controlled and mointored throughout the night.
Due to the smoke and the plume path, Westport residents on Davis Road and Old Bedford Road were told to shelter in place. Residents who were looking for overnight shelter were evacuated and directed to a local hotel.
The Westport Fire Department said that the state haz-mat team and the Department of Environmental Protection were monitoring air quality in the area. The Environmenal Protection Agency also arrived on scene early Tuesday morning to monitory air quality along Davis Road and are reporting no elevated readings, Westport Fire said.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
