The game against Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical School started strong for Dartmouth, with the team gaining a lead in the first half. New Bedford caught up and tied in the third quarter. In a close game, Dartmouth regained the lead by the end of the third quarter.
“I think in past years we’ve been a little bit more relaxed on playing them,” said Head Coach Michael Medeiros. “This year, they took them pretty seriously and they played a good game against us. We just came out on top. We just had a lot of effort, a lot of hustle.”
According to Medeiros, the season hasn’t been a strong one, with six losses and two wins. One of the main goals of the season is to get at least eight wins to qualify for the post-season tournament.
“It didn’t start off right, but we can turn around right now,” said captain Zachary Donatio, a senior on the team.
Donatio has a similar goal for the season as Medeiros: to finish out the season with only wins.
“We work hard in practice every day, and then we … keep the energy high and maybe we’ll get some wins on the board,” he said.
The group is young, with only five seniors on the team. However, Medeiros said that with practice the team is improving.
“We don’t have a large roster, but every guy on our team is going to hustle like they have 10 backups waiting for them because they all know that they have each others’ backs,” he said.
The team practices six days a week, and watches film of their games to learn how to improve.
“I think every single week, if you come out here, you’ll see our guys getting better and better every time,” said Medeiros.
