Water testing guidance following Mid-City Scrap fire
Dartmouth residents living within a 1.5-mile radius of Mid City Scrap will not need to conduct tests on their private drinking water wells after a fire broke out at the facility on Monday, according to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
MassDEP and the Environmental Protection Agency inspected the facility after the fire to confirm that firefighting foam wasn't used to fight the fire, whether the area surrounding the scrap yard is on public water, and what local groundwater conditions are. Based on their findings, MassDEP noted that a widespread impact to private wells is unlikely, and private well sampling isn't currently being recommended.
Mid City Scrap will be evaluating the potential impacts to private drinking water supply wells in the area surrounding the facility. If the evaluation shows that sampling private wells is necessary, affected property owners will be contacted with more information.
