Young field hockey team ‘steps up,’ making it into postseason tournament

Oct 29, 2024

The Dartmouth High School field hockey team has made it into the postseason tournament, ranking 21st in the state with a record of 9-6-1, according to the Friday, Oct. 25 MIAA Power Rankings.

And on Friday, the girls took home another win, defeating Middleboro High School 7-1 and also honoring the end of the season for their one senior, Abby Zariv, who is a goalie.

Head Coach Beth Arguin said, “Considering that it’s a whole new team, I think that we stepped it up. We made tournament, which was a huge goal for us.”

The team had lost its entire varsity line up to graduation last year. With Zariv to be graduating this year, Arguin said it will be a good chance for the “girls to figure out their roles and do the work.”

Zariv joined the team her freshman year — her parents signing her up.

She said though she was nervous at first, she decided to stick with it, but especially once she found her place as the goalie.

“After I became goalie, I just kind of loved it,” Zariv said. “I was just having so much fun. I don’t think I could have been a field player, but being goalie — I don’t know why it just fits me so well.”

She added though it's her final season, it still feels like she’ll be right back on the field with her team next year.

“It’s kind of crazy,” she said. “I don’t even think it’s hit me yet”

Reflecting on her time in field hockey, Zariv said her favorite part of every game is at the end when the team rushes the goalie.

“It makes me feel like I’m really a part of the team and a part of what we’re doing because sometimes when you’re back in goal, you don’t really feel like you’re part of all the action, but when they come together, it’s just really nice,” she added.

Arguin said Zariv is a “great kid on and off the field” and will be “truly missed.”

With the team now in postseason, she said the goal is to go out and play every game their hardest.

“That’s all I can ask,” Arguin said. “If they do their best and they get beat — it is what it is. But as long as they put the effort in and don’t give up.”

Despite not having a lot of varsity experience, she said the girls truly stepped up this season. There’s still much to work on, but “I’m proud of them,” she added.
