Outdoor sculpture exhibit opens June 20
The sculptural work of five artists will take their place at Slocum’s River Reserve starting June 20 as part of “The River Project.”
Inspired by the Reserve, these sculptures created by the artists will engage viewers to explore the interaction between art and nature.
The exhibit includes large steel flower buds emerging from the ground, gold frames hanging from trees, an Algonquin word written into the landscape, a tree shadow captured in fabric and hands spinning around in many directions like a whirligig.
The River Project officially opens on Saturday, June 20 with a free “Sculpture Walk” at the Slocum’s River Reserve at 10 a.m. A companion exhibit at the nearby Gustin Gallery will open at 11 a.m., and an opening reception will take place at the Gustin Gallery from 5 to 8 p.m. on the same day.
Sculptures at the Slocum’s River Reserve will be on display from June 20, 2015 through June 10, 2016.
Drawings, sketchbooks, models and other concept work created by the artists will be exhibited June 20 through September 27 at the Gustin Gallery, located at 231 Horseneck Road in Dartmouth, just north of the Slocum’s River Reserve.
The exhibition, entitled The Slocum’s River Project: Thoughts & Processes, chronicles the creative thinking of each artist as they refined their ideas and visions for the sculptures on the Reserve. In addition, an artists’ talk series will take place at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery in Westport on Saturday, September 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, October 24 from 6 to 7 p.m.
The River Project is a partnership organized by the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, The Trustees of Reservations, the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, Gustin Gallery and the Dedee Shattuck Gallery.
The project features works by five regionally based sculptors: Liz Shepherd (Boston, MA), Jim Lawton (Dartmouth, MA), Jenine Shereos (Boston, MA), Matthew Hincman (Boston, MA) and Isabel Mattia (Westport, MA). Support for The River Project is provided by generous contributions from individual donors, foundations and businesses.
