Barbara M. Piva, 86

Barbara M. (Roy) Piva, age 86, of New Bedford, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Donald Piva.

Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Edward and Erma (Baker) Roy, she had resided in Dartmouth for most of her life before moving to New Bedford.

Barbara had worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, Don Piva & Sons, but her most cherished role was that of homemaker and family matriarch.

Known as Nana to her loving family, she enjoyed knitting, gardening, baking and shopping. Nana was the official weather reporter for the entire family, who relied on her for their event planning. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and her dog, Trina.

Her family includes six children, Steve Piva and his wife Michelle, Donna Labelle and her husband Ron all of Dartmouth, Nance Bellizzi and her husband Jim of N. Carolina, Barby Jenney and her husband Bub, D.J. Piva, and his wife Katie and Jim Piva and his wife Ricki all of Dartmouth; four siblings, Kenny Roy, Diane Fish, Sue Michaud and the late Sonny Roy. Nana was the proud grandmother of her 15 grandchildren: Sloan Russell Piva and his wife, Chrissy, Sadie Piva, Keith Labelle and his wife Karen, Jenny Labelle, Katelyn Houbre and her husband Matt, Richard and Dominic Bellizzi, Lynne Bellizzi, Stephanie Jordan and her husband Scott, Crystal and Chelsea Jenney, Abigail, Maddie, Riley and Logan Piva and many nieces and nephews.

In accordance with her wishes, she will be cremated and a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Nana's memory may be made to the Neediest Families Fund, 25 Elm St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
