Meeting for possible town youth center coming up

The Dartmouth Parks and Recreation Department will be holding a March 26 meeting about the possibility of building a youth recreation center in town.

The facility has been something board members have been discussing since 2008 and 2010 after a group of youth programs came together seeking facilities to use, according to Joe Vieira of the Parks and Recreation Board.

Currently, many of the youth programs in town rent out space from the high school or middle school. However, Vieira said it can end up being costly to the programs.

Steve Souza, a Dartmouth resident, came forward with an idea and it found a lot of interest, but essentially there was no funding to back it.

The ultimate idea is to build a center on town-owned land and have the town be in charge of it. The center would get funding from the town and be available for use by anyone in town.

“It comes down to who should be running the rec center and it should be the town,” Vieira said.

Vieira posted a message on social media to Dartmouth residents about the projected idea. This came about after Burgo Basketball recently approached the town about building an indoor facility on its leased land.

The meeting will be held at Town Hall, 400 Slocum Road.
