Contractor named for North Dartmouth Library project

The North Dartmouth Library project is moving forward as a construction contractor has been picked for the project.

At the May 21 Select Board meeting, project manager Daniel Pallotta announced five bids came in for the project to build a new town library on Cross Road near Potter Elementary School. Of the five bids, the building committee overseeing the project went with the lowest and most responsible bidder at $8.5 million, G&R Construction out of Quincy.

Pallotta said the bids came close budget-wise. The second lowest bid was only $40,000 higher, he said.

“It’s slightly higher than the estimate we had projected, but it is all inclusive of everything with the exception of landscaping,” Pallotta said.

Pallotta said they are working with the contractor to try and either get landscaping work back in, or find another way to handle it. It had to be removed from the bid due to its high price tag.

Although higher than estimated, the project is still within the $10.5 million in funds Town Meeting voters had approved for the project last year.

The Select Board voted unanimously to approve awarding the contract. A notice of award will be sent out, and a contract is expected to be in place within two weeks.

Once built, the North Dartmouth Library will include 15,800 square feet of space on a 10-acre town-owned parcel of land. Included in the design is a 100-person capacity multi-purpose room, a smaller conference room, and adult, children's, and young adult wings.

The building will replace the existing North Dartmouth Library on Tucker Road. It is planned to be demolished to make room for a relocation of Tucker Road, which will eventually form a four-way signalized intersection with Route 6 and Hathaway Road.
