Summer plover stroll, June 21

Jun 12, 2018

The Lloyd Center will kick off the summer season with a solstice plover stroll on June 21, 5:30 - 7 p.m. at Demarest Lloyd State Park.

The center’s research associate, Jamie Bogart, will lead the stroll, which will include lectures about nesting shorebirds at the dynamic ecosystem of Demarest Lloyd State Park.

The stroll will cover a large sand spit which provides a nesting habitat for plovers, least terns, and diamondback terrapins (an estuarine turtle) which are all nesting at this time. Other birds such as ospreys and egrets may also be seen.

The cost to attend is $8 for Lloyd Center members, $10 for non-members, and half-price for children under 12. It is limited to 20 individuals.

Those attending are asked to bring birding equipment, bug spray, and footwear appropriate for a beach and intertidal flat hike.

A rain date is set for June 22.
