Talk scheduled on Underground Railroad

Sep 7, 2021

The Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society will host a presentation by UMass Dartmouth Professors Timothy D. Walker and Len Travers at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19 at the society headquarters, 1205 Russells Mills Road.

They will discuss the recent book, “Sailing to Freedom, The Maritime Underground Railroad” recently published by UMASS Press, and edited by Walker. The book is a collection of essays, one by Travers, in Chapter 9 titled “Making a Living in the “Fugitive’s Gibraltar” 179 People of Color in New Bedford, 1838– 1845.

The ten essays reconsider and contextualize how escapes were managed along the East Coast, moving from the Carolinas, Virginia and Maryland to safe harbor in northern cities such as Philadelphia, New York, New Bedford, and Boston.
