Spreading the seeds of food security awareness
The Dartmouth Friends of the Elderly donated $3,000 to the YMCA’s Sharing the Harvest Program.
Sharing the Harvest is a nonprofit, volunteer driven community farm located in Dartmouth with a mission to feed the hungry.
Maria Connor, Friends of the Elderly president, said they typically like to cover the cost of the seeds and this year’s donation should cover “almost” all for the beginning of the harvest.
Connor highlighted how the YMCA will often bring fresh vegetables to the Council on Aging during the summer months and sometimes in the fall.
She said the Friends of the Elderly “feel strongly” about the program given not only its impact on seniors, especially those on fixed incomes and with current food prices, but also because of its work for communities throughout the South Coast struggling with food insecurity.
