Emeritus Alan R Rosen, 88

Professor Emeritus Alan R Rosen 88 of Westport, MA passed away at Charlton Memorial Hospital on Sunday, September 22, 2024 surrounded by family and friends. Born in Willimantic CT he was the middle child of Max and Anne Rosen.

A graduate of Tilton Academy Alan received his Baccalaureate Degree from the University of Hartford, and his Master’s Degree in English from Pennsylvania State University. He also was an ABD from Pennsylvania State University. He taught at Robert Morris College, now University, in Pittsburgh, PA, and Northeastern University in Boston before moving on to UMass Dartmouth in 1968. There he had a long and distinguished career as Professor of American literature and screenwriting.

One of Alan's favorite projects was being a consulting author of the screenplay for the 1988 movie, The Wizard of Loneliness, based on the book by John Nichols. When in California he was excited to work with John Ritter. He also served as a mentor to many students at UMass, including Academy Award winner for Best Adapted Screenplay [LA Confidential] and Razzie Award [The Postman] winner Brian Helgeland.

Prolific pianist Alan was known for hosting many gatherings where guests celebrated with food, music, song and a few glasses of wine. While living in Mattapoisett he spent many days on the beach, sailing, rowing and enjoying life.

Alan was predeceased by his sisters Shirley Schochet and Marilyn Guthart. He leaves behind his nieces Jackie Guthart and Jodi Horn and nephews Michael Schochet and wife Ami, Marc Guthart and wife Janet, Brian Schochet and wife Giselle and David Guthart and wife Karen. He was also survived by numerous great nephews and nieces and great-great nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Alan’s wishes he will be cremated. There will be no services or visitation.
