Basketball team struggles against league opponents
The Dartmouth High boys basketball team is still trying to find its way after facing two losses in the first two league match-ups of the season.
Dartmouth (3-6) opened a January 10 game against league rival Barnstable trailing by 8 heading into the second quarter 11-19. With less than a minute remaining in the second, two Dartmouth baskets put the Indians up by a single point, 25-24 to close out the half.
In the third quarter, the Indians got to work building up a lead, ending it up by 9 points, 37-46, which the Indians maintained until about five minutes left in the fourth. Barnstable began to pick away at a 55-46 lead, and with less than a minute to go, pulled ahead with two free throws. A basket and more free throws led to a 60-55 loss for Dartmouth.
“It went back and forth,” said head coach Jeff Caron. “We dug a hole, we dug ourselves out, and we blew it.”
While the team struggled offensively throughout the game and with frequent fouls, Caron was impressed with the effort the Indians defense put out.
It was the Indians’ second league loss after falling to Bridgewater-Raynham 67-55 on January 6.
“They came out and jumped at us,” Caron said of the January 6 game. “They had the game on hand for most of the night.”
Caron said he is still working to bind his team together as a unit. He is already gearing up for the Indians’ next game against New Bedford High School.
“Our heads are up, so once midnight strikes, we move along and we’re ready to start preparing for New Bedford,” Caron said.
