Bernard R. "Bernie" Allain, 75, of Dartmouth, died unexpectedly on November 18, 2024 in Chesterfield, N.H.  

 

Bernie was born in New Bedford to David and Doris (Lavoie) Allain. He graduated from New Bedford High School in 1967.  He pursued a career as an accountant and attended Johnson & Wales University, University of San Diego and Southeastern Massachusetts University where he received his M.B.A.  He worked at Titleist for 40 years before retiring in 2009.  He then worked for Northern Wind in New Bedford for 10 years.  Bernie liked to be busy and after retiring for a second time in 2020 he accepted a job with Ahead USA in New Bedford in 2022 where he worked until his passing.  He was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church.  

 

Bernie was married to Maureen (Medeiros) Allain for 48 years.  They were set up on a blind date in 1976 and he said he fell in love at first sight.  They married that same year.  They began their life together living in Fairhaven, then moved to Escondido, CA for several years before settling down in Dartmouth where they raised their two children, Nicole and Matthew.  

 

Bernie was the perfect father and proud "Papa" to his three grandchildren, Kennedy, Carson and Addison.  He was patient, loving and could solve any problem.  He never missed any of their games or events and always had his camera to record everything his grandchildren did.  He took an interest in all their activities, loved listening to their stories, taking them places and Friday night family dinners.  

 

Bernie enjoyed bowling, golf, billiards, history, reading, playing the guitar and collecting stamps, baseball cards and comic books.  He loved being outside taking care of his yard, growing vegetables, sleeping in his hammock and relaxing in his pool.  Aside from his family, the thing he loved most was baseball.  He played it from the time he was a child until he was an adult.  He shared his love of the Red Sox with Nicole, Matthew, Kennedy and Addison, making memories to last a lifetime watching games from their seats at Fenway Park.  He always looked forward to spending time with Carson playing chess, watching hockey and driving go-carts.  

 

Bernie is survived by his wife, Maureen; his daughter, Nicole of Dartmouth; his son Matthew and his wife Jillian of Fairhaven; his grandchildren, Kennedy, Carson and Addison; his sister Doreen Wotton and her husband Russell of Dartmouth and his brother Ronald of Troy, N.H. as well as several nieces and nephews.  Bernie loved his "other daughter" Dawn Camille and was honored to be "Papa" to her sons, Harrison and Kaden.

 

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 26th at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Julie Billiart Church, Dartmouth at 10 AM.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven.  Visiting hours will be on Monday, November 25th from 4-7 PM.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Jimmy Fund.  For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
