Dartmouth police investigating suspect in Marion, Mattapoisett thefts

Jan 2, 2017

Dartmouth police are determining if a suspect in a string of car break-ins and a home invasion in Marion and Mattapoisett is connected to incidents in Dartmouth.

According to a press release from the Marion Police Department, the suspect, who has not been named, is believed to have broken into several cars and a home in Marion on December 31.

In the home invasion, the thief stole several items from the house and used keys in the home to steal a Toyota Avalon. A Marion Police report states that the car was later discovered in New Bedford.

In New Bedford, detectives placed the Avalon under surveillance and were able to identify a suspect, who had a medical emergency during an interview with police. The suspect was taken to the hospital.

A stolen Toyota Tacoma was later discovered in Marion in the same neighborhood where the Avalon was taken. The Tacoma was stolen earlier in the week in Dartmouth.

A search warrant for the suspect’s apartment led to the discovery of most of the items stolen from the Marion home as well as items reported stolen in break-ins in Mattapoisett.

Dartmouth Police Det. Kyle Costa said the department is investigating the suspect for the theft of the Tacoma and is seeing if he is connected to other incidents in Dartmouth that he could not detail due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Police are still investigating.
