But the town also had fun this year, with kids taking part in sports and theater productions and residents attending numerous community events.
Take a look back at the year through some of our top photos and top stories.
January
The year began with some new local businesses, with Lilly Pad Boutique and Boujee Bean both opening. Kids also got a taste of snow in the year’s first significant snowfall.
February
In February, Gary Carreiro was named the sole interim town administrator while girls took to the playing fields with the Dartmouth Girls Athletic League. Dartmouth basketball player Kat Cheesebro also scored her 2,000 point in a record breaking performance.
March
March was a month of talent, with Dartmouth High School hosting its annual Dartmouth’s Finest competition and the Bishop Stang girls ice hockey team making its TD Garden debut. Sunrise Bakery also reopened under new ownership after being closed for nearly two years.
April
In April, Dartmouth residents took the polls and voted in Susan Murray to the Board of Health. Residents also participated in the national “Hands Off” protests and had some fun hunting for eggs during the annual Parks and Recreation egg hunt at Apponagansett Park.
May
Kids were very busy in May, waving flags in a Veteran's Day Parade and competing in a game of tug-of-war at the Special Olympics. Dartmouth middle school kids also got a chance to visit Neverland with the On Stage Theatrical Productions.

September
September had the themes of houses and animals. One house burned down from fireworks, and the second-oldest house in town was moved from its original location. We met a sheep who has her own mechanical wheelchair, and a rare completely blue lobster that found a new home at UMass Dartmouth.

In October, a plane crashed on I-195, killing a Rhode Island couple had the breaking news of a plane crash that killed two Rhode Island residents. A man was also charged for having illegal fireworks. Girls also took to science labs at UMass Dartmouth and to the lacrosse and softball playing fields.
November
