Stanley Mickelson finishes career on the Select Board
Stanley Mickelson attended his last meeting of the Select Board as a member of the board on Monday, March 30. It wasn’t just a normal meeting, as family, police and past members of the Select Board showed up to bid him farewell.
“It’s only the beginning,” said Mickelson. “I’ll be part of the government in some point. I’ll find a landing place for myself, one of the boards or committees to help out. For a little bit, I’ll just lay back and enjoy the roses.”
Mickelson served on the Select Board for 12 years, beginning April 1, 2014, but his career for the town of Dartmouth started much earlier. He served the town for a total of 20 years as a member of the Select Board, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals and as a Town Meeting Member.
“He’s been doing this for so long, and I’m so, so proud of him,” said Kala Joblon, his wife. “He’s done a lot for the town, he loves the town. I can’t have asked for a better person, and I love him truly.”
The four previous board members who showed up were Lara Stone, David Cressman, Mike Watson and John George. Stone brought flowers for Mickelson and Joblon, as she worked alongside in his role.
“I think, as a community, you can look back on your legacy [and] there’s some really high outstanding things that you and the rest of the board members accomplished during your tenure," said Cressman.
Watson stated that Mickelson always did what he thought was right for Dartmouth. George mentioned that the only thing he and Mickelson agreed on was wanting to help Dartmouth, and wanting to know where he buys his socks.
“My mother always gave me the advice … you shouldn’t be sitting next to Stanley,” said Select Board member David Tatelbaum, “He looks too good and too dressed, he makes you look bad.”
Stanley didn’t just receive kind words but also a citation for his work for the town, a glass trophy and a sign that Tatelbaum took off a street pole— where it was illegally hung. He gifted the sign, which was for a dog poop removal service, to Mickelson as a parting gift. They ended the celebration with cake.
Mickelson received a standing ovation when it was announced this was his final day.
“I’m overwhelmed by the support [from] some of my dear friends,” said Mickelson.
