DNRT to lead walk through Slocum's River Reserve before it closes
Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust (DNRT) will host a final walk on June 4 at 11 a.m before it closes on June 10. Some of the artists who created the large-scale sculptures at the Slocum’s River Reserve will be joining.
The River Project 2015 is a display of five large-scale, site-specific sculptures at the Slocum’s River Reserve from June 20, 2015 through June 10, 2016. The five regionally based sculptors involved in the project are Liz Shepherd (Boston, MA), Jim Lawton (Dartmouth, MA), Jenine Shereos (Boston, MA), Matthew Hincman (Boston, MA) and Isabel Mattia (Westport, MA). Inspired by Slocum’s River Reserve, these artists have created sculptures that engage viewers to explore the interaction between art and nature.
There are large steel flower buds emerging from the ground, gold frames hanging from trees, an Algonquin word written into the landscape, a tree shadow captured in fabric, and hands spinning around in many directions like a whirling.
The River Project officially closes on Friday, June 10, 2016 and takes place every three years for a year-long exhibit of large-scale, site specific sculptures. The River Project is a partnership organized by the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, The Trustees of Reservations, the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, the Gustin Gallery and the Dedee Shattuck Gallery. Support for The River Project is provided by generous contributions from individual donors, foundations and businesses.
The Slocum's River Reserve is located on Horseneck Road in Dartmouth, 1.4 miles south of Russell’s Mills Village. More information on The River Project can be found at slocumsriverproject.com or #theriverproject2015 on Instagram.
