Fairhaven man arrested for breaking and entering in Dartmouth
Andre Kerman, 51 of Fairhaven, was arrested and charged with breaking into and stealing from Pearl Vision Center at 83B Faunce Corner Road on Saturday, May 9.
The motion alarm at Pearl Vision Center was set off at 4:09 a.m., with the front door and multiple display cases broken. Police arrived at 4:19 a.m. and found $51,279.75 of merchandise stolen.
A majority of the sunglasses stolen were Maui Jim glasses, with some Rayban glasses sold as well.
Dartmouth police officers spotted Kerman riding a bicycle with a red milk crate on the front in the vicinity, who refused to stop and fled the scene, according to the Dartmouth Police Report. He was followed by Officer Peter Canuel, who saw sunglasses fall out of Kerman’s backpack.
Canuel spotted him a quarter mile away from Pearl Vision Center at Stop and Shop, which is about a 2 minute bike ride away.
When he was caught, officers found sunglasses from Pearl Vision with price tags still attached in his backpack and laundry bag.
Officers found a sledgehammer in a nearby bush. Kerman admitted to using an axe to break into the store and display cases but later stated he used a sledgehammer, according to the Dartmouth Police Department. Pieces of glass that were consistent with the glass door were found on his sneakers.
Between what was found in a backpack, laundry bag and what fell out during pursuit, a total of 199 glasses were stolen.
Kerman was allegedly going to sell the glasses, stating “I needed the money” and “I had a good hit” according to Canuel's report. During a phone call that Officer Amanda Tavares overheard, Kerman told his mother he committed theft and that he “busted through” the door.
Kerman was charged with larceny over $1,200, breaking and entering into a building at nighttime for felony, three counts of vandalizing property, larceny from building and possessing a burglarious instrument.
He was given a $500 bail, which was posted on Monday, May 11 by his mother Mary Allen.
This is the third time that Pearl Vision has been broken into. The previous suspect’s description matched Kerman, with the suspect in the previous break-ins riding away on a bicycle with a red milk crate on the front.
