Fire breaks out on Hixville Road, no one injured
A fire broke out at a house on Hixville Road on Friday, Jan. 16. One person and dog escaped, while another dog died in the fire. The source of the fire is unknown at this time. The other three inhabitants were uninjured as well.
The basement and first floors have extensive fire, smoke and water damage, according to Chief Richard Arruda. Nothing was salvageable, and all of the family's personal goods were destroyed, according to a GoFundMe to help the family.
Fire district three received a call about the fire around 1:30 p.m. Due to smoke alarms alerting the occupant, they were able to make it out uninjured.
Firefighters attempted to enter the first floor but had to retreat due to the floor collapsing into the basement. Firefighters were able to handle the fire from both inside and outside with basement access.
Firefighters attempted to resuscitate the second dog after finding it in the basement, but were unsuccessful.
Due to no fire hydrants on Hixville Road, it took tankers from multiple districts to extinguish the fire. District three received aid from Fire District 1, Fire District 2, Freetown and Westport fire departments.
