Fire department holds annual pig roast
The Dartmouth Fire Department District 3 continued their 18-year tradition of inviting the community to a pig roast, featuring a whole pig, on Saturday, Aug. 15.
This was the third event after COVID-19 temporarily shut down the roast. The fire department used to do all of the cooking themselves, from the cornbread to roasting and making the pulled pork. Now, they hire Pig Pickin’ of Norton to cater the event while the firefighters work the raffle and drink station.
On average, about 150 people come out for lunch, raising between $3,000 and $5,000. The funds go toward their engine company, which is a scholarship account.
The engine company does a number of things with the funds as well, such as disaster relief.
“Anything good the fire department doesn’t do, we step in and help out with,” said Nick Livesy, the president of the engine company.
Everyone filled up their plates with cornbread, beans, potato salad, chicken, applesauce and of course the star of the show; the pulled pork from a whole roasted pig.
Brian West and Jeff Sylvia both agreed that the food was “very good.” They originally jokingly had differing opinions, with West giving a thumbs up and Sylvia a thumbs down. He quickly rescinded this and clarified he was enjoying the meal.
Some of the younger guests were a bit more unsure, with Charlotte O’Connor and Toni Carlos, ages 9, and Georgia Seland, 6, describing the pig as “creepy.” They did agree they were going to enjoy the sides.
“Everyone just gets together, have a good time,” said Livesy.
