Located at the Dartmouth Town Hall is a Retired Flag Box Receptacle built by Tyler Ferriera of boy scout troop 74 for his eagle scout project.

The receptacle was built as a place for people to dispose of their nylon American flags. The flags shouldn’t be burned because burning nylon releases toxic chemicals, which can pose significant health and environmental hazards.

Before disposing a flag, people should cut out the blue field of stars. Once the stars are removed, the flag is no longer considered a living representation of the United States. The stripes can then be disposed of without a ceremony.

The removed blue field of stars will be collected and presented to veterans in the area as a reminder that their service and sacrifice hasn’t been forgotten.

Hand flags on sticks, swag, bunting flags and other decorations shouldn’t be placed in the receptacle.
