Scarecrow takeover in Padanaram
Crows will probably be avoiding Padanaram Village for the rest of October, as the businesses in the area are holding a scarecrow contest.
The owner of Padanaram Outfitters, Natalie Sine, got the idea from a member of the Dartmouth Cultural Center. She felt that the town needs more year-round events, and she hopes to expand the contest to the community next year.
“I love seeing all the scarecrows in town,” said Sine. The scarecrow outside Padanaram Outfitters is a jack-o-lantern in a jacket sporting a buoy.
Other business owners agreed that they wish there were more year-round events, such as Wendy Joblin, the owner of children’s clothing shop Folia.
“I like to participate in everything in town and we thought it was a fun idea,” said Joblin. The two scarecrows outside Folia are small scarecrows in children's clothes.
Around 15 businesses are participating, with most of these businesses having a themed scarecrow. Scuttlebutt cafe has a barista with a blue wig welcoming customers in, the Cultural Center has an artist holding a paint palette and EF Cost Recovery has a Patriots themed scarecrow.
“I think [we joined the contest] so that we could participate in group activity and compete against our neighbors for fun,” said Casey Cuttings, one of the co-owners of Scuttlebutt.
Visitors to the village will be the ones deciding the winner. Each participating business has ballots and a ballot box inside. There are four contests; Most Creative, Best of Village, Kid Friendly and Scariest.
The last day to vote will be during the Fall Sip and Stroll on Friday, Oct. 23 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The scarecrows will be on display until Saturday, Oct. 31.
