Students get real world experience in the media industry at the Dartmouth High School
The Dartmouth High School media students are getting real world experience with their latest project: making an advertisement for the Bourne Public Schools.
The tech director for Bourne schools, Chris Oliver, is a member of the Dartmouth School Committee. He brought the idea of students making an advertisement to Robert Perrotti, the lead media teacher at the high school.
“It’s going to be a very professional scenario for them,” said Perotti, “Plus they get to network with kids outside of the district. I think that’s a win-win.”
He added, “I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for kids to do a real world assignment."
The group of six students are filming, setting up the cameras and lighting, working the microphones, writing the scripts, conducting interviews and editing the videos together. DCTV is helping the students to create the final project.
“I think it’s important to help with the process,” said student Annie Witzig.
The Bourne schools wanted an interview-style advertisement, with interviews taking place in classrooms and their innovation lab.
“I thought it opened some opportunities, like it might benefit me in the future,” said Daniel Hart-Germane. He worked on recording B-roll for the advertisement.
There were many perks for the students who worked on this project: pay, experience, and most popularly, two days off from school.
“I thought it was pretty fun,” said Landon Almeida, one of the media club officers. He worked on the invoices, and is planning to help with editing as well.
The Bourne School also gave a donation to the Dartmouth Schools for the media program.
Perrottie said the experience has given students the opportunity to learn about media outside of the classroom, such as getting a business quote, networking and writing invoices. They even got to use a drone for an aerial shot of the school.
The advertisement is going to be finished in early May, and will be aired at the following school committee meeting.
