Things to do: Learn about Lagoa, shop for jewelry

There’s a lot happening in Dartmouth in any given week, here’s what’s coming up this week:

Friday, May 13
Learn about Lagoa, Dartmouth's sister city
To celebrate the town’s 500th anniversary, a delegation from Lagoa, Portugal will visit Dartmouth this month, bringing with it an exhibit on the history of the town. The materials will be on display at the Southworth library from May 13 through May 26 during regular library hours.

Saturday, May 14
Buy jewelry from the Ladies Guild
A jewelry sale fundraiser to benefit the St. Julie’s Ladies Guild will be held on Saturday, May 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the St. Julie Billiart Church Hall, 494 Slocum Road.

The sale will include a wide variety of new, used, vintage, and fine jewelry.

Donate to My Brother’s Keeper
Dartmouth non-profit My Brother’s Keeper will hold a “pop your trunk” spring collection drive for new baby items and cleaning supplies on Saturday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The drive will be held at the My Brother’s Keeper building at 1015 Reed Road in Dartmouth.

Specific items the group is looking for include: diapers, wipes, laundry detergent, shampoo/conditioner, hand soap, tooth paste/brushes, baby lotion, bar soap, disinfectant spray, and multi-surface cleaner.

Shell painting for kids
At 10 a.m. on May 14, the Dartmouth Cultural Center will host a free shell painting class for kids with instructor Brenda Moreira. The class is part of the Southcoast Spring Arts Festival.

Sunday, May 15
Celebrate spring with a local chorus

Sine Nomine, a local choral ensemble which features multiple Dartmouth residents, will perform at St. Lawrence, Martyr Church at 565 County St., New Bedford on Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m.

The performance is titled: “Love and Roses: Six centuries of music celebrating the joy of Spring.” It is free and open to the public.

Tour the Akin House
The Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust will open the doors of its historic 1762 Akin House to visitors on May 15 and 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The house is located at 762 Dartmouth Road. The event is free and open to the public.
